To end a marriage relationship a party must petition the court to pronounce that there are in law the grounds to terminate the marriage.

Divorce petitions today are rarely contested and for the most part can be processed on a paper basis without the necessity to attend court in person.

The final divorce decree can be obtained within 3 –4 months, however it is usual to delay pronouncement of Decree Absolute (the final decree) until the finances of the marriage have been sorted out.

Both the finances and the petition can take place simultaneously.
